Implantable Dielectric Sensors

Micromet Instruments' line of implantable sensors provide the capability to place sensors into a variety of environments to make dielectric measurements. The sensors come in two substrate types, polyimide and quartz.

Low Conductivity Integrated Circuit Sensors (020S, 022S): The minimum recommended sample thickness to apply to the sensor is 12 microns. Specialized on-chip circuitry enables dielectric measurements to be made at extremely low conductivity levels (10E-16 to 10E-5 siemens/cm) and frequencies down to 0.001 Hz. The sensor is pre-calibrated with a look-up table to provide high accuracy permittivity and loss factor values. Typical applications include monitoring the curing of thermosetting resins, identifying dipole relaxations, and measuring the dielectric properties of oils and lubricants. Normal sensor environments are in ovens or under ambient conditions. This sensor can only be used with the Eumetric System II and System III Microdielectrometers.

IDEX Sensors (036S, 038S, 065S, 066S, 068S): Recommended minimum sample thickness to apply to sensor is 4.5 mils (115 microns). Typical applications include monitoring the curing of most thermosetting resins and composites. The thin, flexible, and reliable nature of the sensor makes it ideal for high pressure laminates, curved parts, and production. Normal sensor environments are in presses, autoclaves, ovens and under ambient conditions. The 036S consists of electrodes on a 14" flexible polyimide substrate. The 066S and 068S consist of Teflon wires connected to the IDEX sensor head. The 065S consists of the sensor head alone.

Filtered IDEX Sensors (037S, 067S, 069S): Consist of IDEX sensors protected by fiberglass filters. Typical applications include graphite composites and metal filled materials. The filters prevent graphite fibers or large metal particles present in a material from shorting the electrodes. Normal sensor environments are in presses or autoclaves. The 037S consists of filtered electrodes on a 14" flexible polyimide substrate. The 067S and 069S consist of Teflon wires connected to the IDEX sensor head.

High Conductivity Sensor (041S): The minimum recommended sample thickness is 1.6 mm. Typical applications include highly conductive materials such as water-based polymers and highly carbon black filled polymers. Normal sensor environments are in presses, ovens, autoclaves or under ambient conditions.

Micron Sensors: The Micron sensor line consist of chrome electrodes on a quartz substrate. Leads are Teflon coated (high temperature fiberglass insulation available) and connected with silver filled epoxy. Three different versions of the Micron sensor are available; custom lead lengths are also available. Normal sensor environments are in ovens, hot plates, autoclaves or under ambient conditions.

MS-01: The minimum recommended sample thickness applied to the sensor is one (1) micron. Typical applications include monitoring the processing and diffusion characteristics of photoresists and other thin polymer coatings where the sample is spun coat or sprayed onto the sensor. For ease of use, 010S version is mounted on a glass slide. Custom mounting configurations are available.

MS-05: The minimum recommended sample thickness applied to the sensor is five (5) microns. Typical applications include monitoring the curing, drying and diffusion characteristics of paints and coatings. For ease of use, the 017S version is mounted on a glass slide. Custom mounting configurations are available.

MS-25: The minimum recommended sample thickness applied to the sensor is 25 microns. Typical applications include monitoring the curing of PMR-15 and other high temperature polymers and composites, monitoring the curing and drying of paints and coatings and measurements on corrosive polymers.
