The development of new high-tech ceramic, powdered metal and composite materials requires exact knowledge of the thermal expansion and sintering behavior. Investigations into reactions and phase transitions are often required under extreme measurement conditions, such as very high temperatures. The NETZSCH Dilatometer 402 C can be equipped with different sample holders and furnaces to fulfill almost all possible requirements of the system. For example, one of the furnaces available for the Dilatometer 402 C allows measurements from room temperature to 2000°C, under inert conditions or in a vacuum, with a high degree of precision.

The DIL 402 C combines many years of experience with the newest technology, a modern, efficient design and easy operation.

Because of its excellent thermal and mechanical properties silicon nitride is used more and more for high-tech applications (e.g. valves in automobile engines). Of course, the properties of the final parts are strongly dependent on the production/sintering process. Depicted in this figure are the thermal expansion and rate of expansion of a silicon nitride green body. The sintering step starting at 1201°C is due to the influence of the sintering additives. The main shrinkage step occurred at 1424°C (extrapolated onset). The effect above 1760°C is most probably due to evaporation of additives.
